Preparation for the worst is essential in business continuity, disaster recovery

In terms of success, the resilience of a business is an aspect that does not receive as much attention as it should. If a company has never asked itself some hard questions, chances are that the organization is not prepared for unforeseen events.

"For your business to be successfully able to deal with any eventuality its structure needs resilience," wrote Business 2 Community contributor Gareth Bull. "This calls for alternate equipment and locations to be available in the case of damage, as well as infrastructure and functions that are designed to allow your business to continue following a disruption."

Traditionally, companies have taken the route of backing up their own redundancies onsite and through physical media. This may seem like a sound idea, but there are too many potential scenarios that could render them useless. Should a fire strike the office and destroy the servers, chances are that the backups would be incinerated in the same blaze.

Not only could a natural event such as a fire jeopardize the future of an entire company, but so can accidental human errors. If a business has never experienced a situation where their data backup needs to be called upon, a regular update of these copies may not be seen as an essential function amidst other aspects of day-to-day operations.

This is why offsite backup needs to be an essential aspect of any company's business continuity strategies, as well as their overarching disaster recovery plans. By allowing redundancies to be managed by a trusted host while being instantly available online, organizations of all sizes will be able to respond to whatever might befall them. That is, after all, the definition of being resilient.
